Sometimes the night was (is) beautiful

I had to watch the boys for Sarah for a while tonight.

When I left her house I looked up, as I usually do, to see if the stars were out - they are.

There is something about the stars in the winter night sky. They are crisp and clean like the air. I think they are that way in the desert as well.

I have always loved the winter night sky. The back door to the little tiny back porch on the house I grew up in, in Dearborn, MI, was in my bedroom. I would often go out, when I was supposed to be in bed, and stand on the porch looking at the stars until I couldn't stand the cold any longer. Orion is an old friend of mine. He would be there, in the black sky over my elementary school building. Even in the city, you can see Orion.

It made me think of two songs.

First, one that I haven't thought of in a long time, by Rich Mullins called "Sometimes by Step (reprise)"
I especially love the hammer dulcimer on the song.

Sometimes the night was beautiful
Sometimes the sky was so far away
Sometimes it seemed to stoop so close
You could touch it but your heart would break
Sometimes the morning came too soon
Sometimes the day could be so hot
There was so much work left to do
But so much You'd already done

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Sometimes I think of Abraham
How one star he saw had been lit for me
He was a stranger in this land
And I am that, no less than he
And on this road to righteousness
Sometimes the climb can be so steep
I may falter in my steps
But never beyond Your reach

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
(Sometimes the night was beautiful)
And I will follow You all of my days
(Sometimes the night . . .)
(Sometimes the night was beautiful)
And I will follow You all of my days
(. . . Was beautiful)
(Sometimes the night was beautiful)
And I will follow You all of my days
(So beautiful)
And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
(Oh God,

Indeed, sometimes the night isn't a scary thing - sometimes it's beautiful, so close you could touch it but your heart would break.

I felt that way tonight.

The other song in one that I often think of when looking at Orion. It is by John Michael Talbot and is called "The Pleiades and Orion" A flowing, gentle song taken from verses in the Bible.

He who created
the Pleiades and Orion
turning darkness into
the light of the dawn
and darkens day into night

Who calls from the waters
renews the world in the falling rain
and who strides the height of creation
He is the Lord
the God of Hosts by name

He formed the mountains
and created the wind
and through His Spirit
declares His thoughts to man

The smallest constellation - and the largest. The particles of atoms - and the universe.
Intricacy, beauty, function, precision from the smallest to the largest. Micro and macro.
There is no part of it that isn't a wonder.

Sometimes, the night is beautiful . . .

I don't have any place that I can put songs for people to hear. If you would like to hear these songs, iTunes has them both as does Napster. For the Rich Mullins song, you want the one that goes for 4:54 mins as the shorter one doesn't have the part about the night.

It sounds as if you might enjoy owning a small telescope. :D
