Of wiring and nice guys

Hi there!

Well, today was an adventure. From up beat despite frustrations, to tears because of said frustrations, to grateful over the resolution of said frustrations.

I changed five light switches in my house. I had the old "clicky" kind and was putting in the newer quiet kind.

It's amazing how difficult that can be. To start with, I had no idea you needed a different kind of switch for situations where you have two switches operating one fixture/outlet. Yep. One needs something called a three-way switch. So I took all of the switches I had bought back and got the correct switches. You see, of the five switches I was replacing all needed to be 3-way, four of which were the pairs needed to operate one fixture and one outlet. One, I was only replacing 1 of the pair to work another fixture. This was the OK part of the frustrations.

Then there is the wee matter of wiring. Electrical wiring is nearly infinite in it's varieties and methodology. It can have all sorts of pretty colors - sometimes too many pretty colors and sometimes not enough pretty colors. I had only two: black and white. My DYI book had three: black, white and red.

I did try to be very careful to put everything on the new switches exactly the way it was on the old switches.

I didn't succeed.

Not one of the fixtures/outlets worked with both switches - each ended up only working off of one of the two switches. I didn't want hubby to come home to an unlit house. I didn't want him coming home to a house with the fridge having to stay shut because one of the fixtures in question is the overhead kitchen light and I wasn't sure if I should leave the breaker on for the places with the funky switches. This was the teary part of the frustrations.

I gave in and called for help. At first the electrician I called could not make it.

More teary stuff.

Then I called him later to find out if I needed to turn off the breakers on the involved areas and he had finished his job sooner than he had expected and was just about to call me.

This is the grateful resolution and nice guy part of the day :-)

I didn't have the traveler wires connected correctly so only the one switch of each pair that had the power (hot) wire coming into it worked. The current was unable to travel (traveler wire) to the other switch. It took Jeff about 20 - 30 minutes to get it all straightened out (he said they were set up oddly as well, each pair was wired a bit differently, so that had played a part in my confusion - that and only two colors of wires) He only charged me $20.

On top of it all, the last time he had been here, all my LOTR stuff and been down and tucked away due to the remodeling. This time, my movie posters were propped against a wall in the livingroom. Jeff is a LOTR fan!!

Here's to Jeff Curry and any other nice guys who come to people's rescues and don't charge a bundle because it was a last minute can you come today call. He made this beautiful day even more beautiful!!

Oh, the photo with this is in my new scrapbook thingy on here. It looks better bigger :-)

Warm and happy hugs to all!

You tried to do wiring yourself!

*awed and impressed*

Thank you :)

Shortly after we moved into this house (about 10 years ago) I put in a new light fixture in our 1/2 bath. That went fine, no problems, which was why I figured I could manage the switches. LOL

I have to hand it to you for trying to do the wiring yourself. I'm absolutely no do-it-yourselfer.

It certainly helps restore your faith in humanity when you end up dealing with a truly nice guy like you did.

Hope all is well with you. I also hope the wedding planning is going well with no real snags.

Take care.

Hi Garnet!

I don't try as much of the DYI stuff as I'd like. MysteriousWays is the real DYI person and she usually does quite well with it.

So far the only worrisome thing with the wedding is hoping enough people can make it. So far it isn't looking great - which we knew might happen with it being on a weeknight. But I think it will come out OK in the end :-)

It's your birthday? Happy almost belated birthday! Will see if the Muse will stir up a little something for the occasion. Any requests?

Really! You'll write a story for me! I've never had a story written for my birthday and I've been wanting one so badly!

Something happy (I could be cruel and say something from your unwritten universe where Paladin is a nice hobbit and he and Pip get along, but it needn't be :-) )

ah . . . ah

autumn, music, water (pond, stream, creek etc.) and Pippin

I'm so excited now!!

Thank you Lin!!!!
