Losing a good friend

My dear friend and companion.
I had to help a dear friend today.  Bobby had started to behave oddly a couple of weeks ago.  This morning I figured out that he wasn't seeing well.  He was also increasingly having accidents.  I made an appointment with the vet to have him put to sleep.  When the vet looked him over, he confirmed what I had noticed, he was nearly blind from detached retinas; a condition usually caused by high blood pressure in older cats.  He was also not his usual personality, most likely because of the blindness.  He bit me while the vet tried to shave a bit of hair off of his leg.  He had never acted that way from the handling or the shaver before.  My decision to have him put to sleep would be the right one.

Bobby was purchased from a no kill animal shelter for my daughter for her to use in the Cat activities in 4H, but he bonded with me.  She did use him to show in 4H and he took Grand Champion Cat one year.

He was a good hunter.  Whenever we would have a mouse in the house, we would make sure Bobby saw it and he would have it in seconds.

He was my good buddy.  He would snuggle with me and would jump up onto the vanity in the bathroom every morning to watch me brush my teeth.  I was the only one he would bump heads with.

I will miss my dear friend and hope to see him again some day.

Fare you well, Bobby.

Thank you so much, shirebound. He will indeed. He was a wonderful cat and, as said above, a dear friend.

Hugs in return,

(((hugs))) I'm so sorry, Pearl honey. We've been through that with two cats, and four dogs. It never gets any easier.

It is the hardest part of having pets, but I still prefer to have them be part of my life than not.

((((((hugs))))))

Thank you, Dreamflower!

I'm crying as I read this. I know he meant a lot to you. I remember you sharing stories about Bobby at the Indy Moot. I'm trying to remember, was he the cat that you got here in Indiana?

Aw, thank you, Garnet.
Yes, he was my Indy cat. The shelter he came from was Home for Friendless Animals, formerly in Noblesville and now (I think) in Waynetown.

He did mean a lot to me. I missed him so much this morning when I went to brush my teeth and he wasn't there to watch.

((((Garnet)))) Thank you.

Oh I'm so sorry. *HUGS* We lost our Rochester (in the icon) in May and it was very hard. Bobby will be missed.

Thank you, mav_fan.

Hard as it is to lose them, I wouldn't want to be without a pet or two. I do have Millie and Goldie still, which helps a little as I'm not in an empty house.

Did we see Bobby when we visited?

I'm sure you did as Bobby was the cat that would usually come out to check out any guests we had. Thank you for remembering him :-)

I'm so sorry. ((((((((hugs)))))))) What a beautiful, beautiful cat. Gorgeous silver-gray hair, and lived for 16 years. And look at those ears. It's never easy, is it? I went through my first loss of one of my cats last year, and my other cat of the same age could go any day. I keep trying to prepare myself, but it's not really possible is it? I'm glad you were able to give him a graceful and pain-free passage.

Thank you, Rosamunde. ((((hugs))))

He was a beautiful boy, and a big cat. When he was in his prime he was a fit 14 pounds and a real armful. I'm sorry to hear that you may soon be losing your other cat :-( No, it isn't really possible to prepare for, no matter how much we try.

Hugs,
Pearl

I went through this last year with my Sydney. It's hard. RIP, Bobby.
